Naturopathic Medicine approaches the patient from its own unique Naturopathic philosophy, looking to "cause" in lieu of "symptoms" so as to treat the whole man. Naturopathic Physicians are trained in the basic medical arts and sciences, bringing about the best of both allopathic and naturopathic philosophies.

The Naturopathic Medical Doctor is trained in a spectrum of natural modalities enabling the practitioner to treat the whole person and bring the patient back to true health without suppressing, drugging, major surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.

Additionally, the training the Naturopathic Medical Doctor receives enables the practitioner to effectively communicate with health care professionals in all medical arts to allow the patient to receive complete and acceptable standards of health care, both allopathic and naturopathic.

(Naturopathy

Science of Keeping Healthy by Nature's Methods)

On March 1, 1929, the United States Congress at Washington, District of Columbia, passed and enacted into law Government Recognition of the Science, Art and Philosophy of Naturopathy. The appointed board of this Healing Arts Commission licensed the practicing Naturopaths in the District of Columbia, of which many are graduates of the United States School of Naturopathy. Naturopathy is a system of the application of natural methods, comprising the use of air, water, earth, sunshine, heat, cold, harmonized foods, exercises, (mentally and physically) rest, dehydrated vegetation, herbs and other natural modalities.

Naturopaths practice and teach that the living body is a vital machine which produces the remedies necessary for immunity in order to protect itself against disease, providing the vital fluids circulate freely and the body is in correct structural alignment.

Retention of waste products in the body and the non-elimination of drugs are considered the most important underlying causes of disease. Structural displacements are the next cause, producing lesions which may be bony, muscular, ligamentous or fascial, and lastly, contracted tissue causing nerve impingement and stasis of bodily fluids. For example, in a ligamentous or bony lesion, a joint usually lacks free movement. In a muscular lesion the muscles lack nerve stimulus or contain an excess of uric acid. These conditions may come from a shock, injury, strain under concussion of forces from the outside greater than the resistant power within the body; inflammation, infection, drugs, serum inoculations, vaccines, reflexes, or other causes. When there is a lack of normal movement the blood and lymph stagnate in the surrounding tissues, causing an uratic condition, acidosis, irritation of the nerves, and depletion of the vegetative system, including the blood vessels.

The oedema, swelling and abnormal contraction of muscles may also affect, by pressure or otherwise, the nerves, lymphatics, arteries and veins. These conditions interfere with the body's ability to make its own serums and anti-toxins, to fight invasions, and are the cause of suffering and disease in all its forms.

Naturopathic diagnosis comprises physical examination of the entire body, with special attention to the spinal column and other osseous articulations; Iridiagnosis, (system of diagnosis from the eyes which reveals injuries and pathological changes going on in the different organs and structures of the body); the use of the fluroscope, X-ray machine, and other scientific appliances: hemoglobin testing, blood-pressure determination; laboratory examination; physical, chemical and microscopic study of the secretions, excretions, and pathological tissues.

Naturopathic treatment removes the cause of disease; corrects dietetic errors, hygienic surroundings, environmental or psychic conditions; reduces osseous displacements, fractures and lacerations; and covers the practice of first aid, gynecology and obstetrics. Naturopathy teaches control of the emotions, passions and appetites by "mental poise" and the prevention of all constitutional disorders. (By DR. FREDERICK W. COLLINS.)
